Truck I is as old as the Fire Depart-ment itself, and to write its record wouldinvolve the enumeration of all the im-portant fires of the last thirty-four years. The quarters of the company are com-modious and comfortable, with the usualdormitory, bath rooms, etc. The truckis a HoUoway Combination, built in Bal-timore, Md., and was received here asrecently as June,1899. Tim Hallihan wasa member of Truck i when he met hisdeath in an heroic attempt to rescue fromthe jaws of death Captain Moholy ofChemical No. 6, who perished in theflames at a fire on Folsom street. DanDonovan, another member, carried a. CAPT. EUGENE CROWE man out of a fire at Jessie and Eckerstreets, and the captain, Eugene Crowe,on February 26, 1900, covered himself 158 SAN FRANCISCO FIREMEN with glory in a perilous but succesful at-tempt to rescue a woman from the flamesof the burning El Monte Hotel on Gearystreet. He carried her bodily from thefifth story down an extension ladder toterra firma at great personal risk of hisown life. The feat was deemed worthyof the bestowal of the Scannell medal,so rarely awarded, and only for someconspicuous act of personal gallantry. Captain Crowe hails from Minnesota,and has been in the department since1894. He assumed the reins of controlof Truck I on August 28, 1897.
