A RECORD OF SERVICE The Thirteenth Engineers, a regiment of railroad men recruited fromsix systems entering Chicago, and trained in that city, was also among thefirst units to leave for France. For nearly two years this regiment ren-dered valiant service in the operation of French railroads in the war railroad men were often under fire, and they performed their difficultand hazardous duties with such bravery and skill that many officers andmen of the regimentwere awarded the Croixde Guerre and other dec-orations by the Frenchgovernment. Though nota combat organization,the Thirteenth was givencombat classification onits discharge. From the coloredpopulation of the statecame two regimentswhich were in the thickof the fighting.
