Brightly coloured festival lanterns hang from the eaves of a Buddhist temple in Chiang Mai Thailand
Lanterns are traditionally used to carry away any bad vices and misfortunes with them when they are released into the sky during festivals especially Loy Krathong festival which is when the population celebrates the end of the rainy season. The lanterns are also said to represent the Buddhas topknot which he cut off to renounce his life as a prince.
