It is of interest to note that the local contemporary form Proterato [P.) sulcifera (Sowerby) is a member of the sub-genus Proterato Schilder, found only in the Indo-Pacific and Australasian areas. The presence of apparently generi- cally different forms in Lower Pleistocene and Recent seas around the South African coasts and the surprising distribution of the genus Hespererato (west coast of America, Antilles, and Europe) may perhaps suggest that the phylogenetic aspects of one, at least, of these generic divisions are not of profound significance.
