Phrenology head from the mid-19th century. Phrenology is the study of a person's characteristics by feeling the shape of their head. It was believed that specific areas, seen marked on the head here, controlled specific personality traits. For instance, people with prominent temples would have been more constructive than those without, according to this model. Phrenology was popular in the 19th century, but is now accepted as having no basis in fact.
