. The American florist : a weekly journal for the trade. Floriculture; Florists. 636 The American Florist. May 2j, experience with it, I should say that it can not be classed as a hot weather car- nation. Governor Wolcott started to bloom early in December and increased in quan- tity of bloom until March, when it was still as prolific as any carnation I ever grew. As a summer white in the houses, it comes pretty near being ideal, with a good loiig stem, perfect calyx and a fine large, full, pure white flower. Her Majesty is another summer white. It has stem and quantity of bloom in its fayor, and during the hot weather loses that objectionable pink streak that shows in dark weather earlier in the sea- son. It is not in the same class as Wolcott, but both have their admirers. AiVolcott is so full of petals that it is almost semi-globular. Her Majesty, with fewer petals, is of the flat, circular type and is much admired by the writer and some others. In pinks, ahead of all others and acknowledged so by its most bitter crit- ics, is Ethel Crocker. As a hot weather pink, it has stem, size and substance of bloom in its favor, but is not sufliciently prolific in cold weather. ,Cressbrook has been discarded since ties; it will last at least two days longer than any other carnation I grow. In scarlet it seems to be generally con- ceded that Estelle is a good summer bloomer. With me it produced fine short stemmed flowers until February, then both stem and flower improved steadily until the hot weather which we had in March came, and with it a lot of spider, since which time it has been steadily declining in quality. Apollo, planted beside Estelle, is prac- tically free from spider. It has given long stemmed flowers in moderate quan- tity and continuously since October 1. The color is pertect, the flower of fair size and the keeping quality second only to Dorothy. If it can be grown free from stem rot (it was the only variety on the place the last season that had stem rot) it
