(Original.) 654 AMERICAN PRACTICE OF SURGERY. (3) There are some writers who claim that there is a chronic circmiiseribedtype of osteomyehtis—a form which is at times most obscure. In such casesthe .r-ray should help greatly in the diagnosis. The disease is to be tlistinguishedfrom the first type only by the fact that the cavities are of large size, that theyoften lie in very dense bone, and that they are to be seen only in plates of greatclearness and which show much bone detail (see Fig. 228). It will be noticedthat, in the case here illustrated, the articular surfaces are free, but that theproximity of the joint has allowed the .r-ray to reveal the true nature of acondition which had been treated for twenty years as rheumatic pain.
