The properties imparted areof a physical nature, and vary with the kindof skin employed, and the modifications ofthe process which it undergoes. Chemicallyconsidered, however, leather is a definite com-pound of tannin and gelatine. Tanning, asan art, dates as far back as nine hundredyears before the Christian Era. The methodsresorted to in early times, consisted of littlemore than merely cleansing and drying theskins, and thus prepared, the latter were usedfor clothing. Leather was largely in useamong the ancient Egyptians, and the workersof that material were so numerous, that theMemnonian quarter of Thebes was character-ized as their especial locality.
