Early pilgrims call it the Sheep Pool(Piscina Probatica), as it was erroneously supposed that the SheepGate (John v. 2) stood on the site of the present gate of St. was fed from the W., and could be regulated and emptied by achannel in a tower at the corner. In a cistern near the of the pool Warren found a double set of vaulted substructions,one over the other, and to the N. of these an apartment with anopening in the N. side of the wall of the Haram.
