At the South streams rising in mountainsflow into Lakes. The Niger in Western Africa is also laiddown. This Map is a very early example of true Chiaroscuroprinting. Of Pomponius ]Mela nothing whatever is known, but heis believed to have lived in the time of the Emperor Claudius. Thisis one of the earliest of all Geographical Works, the First Edition ofwhich, without any Map, appeared in 1471.
