Through the maternal side he is descend-ed in a direct line from Henry IV., known as Henryof Navarre, who, in 1589, inherit-ed the throne of France, repre-senting the Bourbon Navarre, of Michigan,widely noted among the oldFrench families of Detroit forher wit, beauty, and piety, mar-ried Henry B. Brevoort, a mem-ber of one of the old Hollandfamilies of New York, who after-ward became a major in the UnitedStates army, and a commodore inthe United states navy. The onlydaughter of this marriage becamethe wife of Charles L. Eristol, aprominent merchant of Isaac Devoe Bristol was thefourth child of this marriage.
