Stochastic gene expression, illustration. Every cell in an organism contains every single gene that makes up the organisms genome. However, they are not all active (expressed) in each cell. Different genes are expressed in different cells and also under different cellular conditions. The concentration of transcriptional regulators can also have an effect on which genes are expressed, and how strongly they are expressed, this is known as stochastic gene expression.
