No Joy Ride. Greenland mountain ranges "dare" the aviator to find a spot to "sit down". Above such formidable terrain as this stretch the flight lines of Coast Guard planes operating the Iceberg Census. From a base in the Sondrestrom Fjord area the planes shuttle in the fanlike patterns above the Baffin Bay and the Arctic Highlands carrying aerial cameras that record the scene below. It's icebergs they're looking for and counting (by photo). Some days they count over 6,000, others less than 200. The Coast Guard Iceberg Census counted 40,232 icebergs during the 1949 operation.
