Blood analysis. Chemists using a flow cytometer (left) to measure P-selectin expression on platelets in blood. The results can be seen on the screen (centre) Flow cytometry is a technique for counting, examining, and sorting microscopic particles suspended in a stream of fluid. It allows simultaneous analysis of the physical and chemical characteristics of single cells and their constituents. P-selectin plays an essential role in the initial recruitment of leukocytes (white blood cells) to the site of injury during inflammation.
