. 4 Battalion, Yorkshire Regiment Captain Batty was a scholarship student at the Royal College of Art, South Kensington where he carried out an artists commission for the art critic and explorer Sir Martin Conway (subsequently the first Director General of the Imperial War Museum). He broke off his studies to join the London University Officer Training Corps in October 1914. Batty received his commission in July 1915. He was attached to the Green Howards and was promoted to captain on 16 September 1916. Aged 24, Captain Batty was killed in action during the Battle of the Somme on 25 October 19
