A party of persons connected with the Passaic StreetMission, in Passaic, N. J., a few days ago, chartered anelectric car on the New Jersey Electric Railway, and wentby way of Paterson to Singac and back. The Astruck folding fender, which is illustrated in theaccompanying cuts, is so constructed that it is always overthe rails, whether it is in position, as shown in Fig. 1, orfolded, as in Fig. 4, under the car. The frame or supportis provided with flanged pilot wheels which ride on the. °tff- rails. A central tube is attached rigidly to the fender frameand slides over a tube which is attached pivotally to thepilot board of the car truck. An automatic lock on theframe holds the entire fender in position in front of the dash-board, so that it is not affected by the oscillation of the car,and the wheels are permitted to act freely on the curves andswitches as well as on the straight stretches of track. The fender, as shown in Fig. 1, is so poised that the cush-ion buffer at the front clears the rails by two and one halfinches; no person, therefore, who is struck can pass underit. It is held in position by springs sufficiently strong toinsure safety. When a person comes in contact with theAstruck fender he is struck by the cushion buffer at a pointbetween the heel and the ankle, and naturally falls into thebed which yields under the weight, the fender sliding downat the rear and outward at the front, as shown in Fig. 3,and remaining in this
