Paris, France - 19 September 2018 There is a peculiarly French concept of 'la gloire' (Glory) that permeates much of its public art and monuments. This results in a surplus of overblown, vainglorious monuments to war, victory, revolution and patriotic heroism. Much of it dates from revolutionary fervour, of course. Nice for the tourists, but no so good when you stop to think of it! This example, with a suitably beefy woman holding a spear, lives at the top of the Grand Palais, Paris - accompanied suitably be a fluttering tricolor.
