James Joseph Sylvester (1814-1897) English Mathematician. Sylvester worked on matrix theory, algebraic invariance (which assumed great importance in quantum mechanics and relativity theory), roots of quintic equations and number theory. He founded the American Journal of Mathematics, while a professor at the University of Virginia.
