Paul Ekman (born 1934), American psychologist. Ekman is a researcher of emotions and their relationship to facial expressions. His research with remote tribes has shown that many facial expressions, such as anger, fear, joy, sadness and surprise are universal to all human cultures. Ekman has also devised a method that analyses facial microexpressions. These rapid ticks and squints are not normally noticeable but can betray someone who is telling lies. Photographed in 2008.
