Hubble Captures Smoking Gun of a Newborn Star Stars are born in dark clouds of gas and dust like this. But star formation is an energetic process, and newly-formed stars can send out a brilliant display of lights called Herbig-Haro objects. These objects form as jets of hot gas spewed by the newborn star collide with the surrounding matter at high speeds. In this Hubble Space Telescope image, these objects can be seen at the top center as bright blue streaks traveling away from the star that created them at 150,000 miles per hour, towards the upper left.
