These diaphragms are made in halves, with tight-fitting surfaces, and the upper halves are screwed to the toppart of the housing so as to be lifted with it. The shaft passesinto and from the housing in stuffing boxes with metalpacking. The governor is a slight modification of the well-knownEscher-Wyss regulator used in many water turbine installa-tions. It consists of a ball governor which operates a pilotvalve controlling the motion of a plunger directly over the. 50O-HP ZOELLY TURBO-GENERATOR SET bucket blades decreases from their inner to their outer ends toreduce the centrifugal force, and thus permits a high peripheralspeed. Between each rotor there is a guide wheel or diaphragm inwhich the guide blades are held. Since the expansion of thesteam takes place in these diaphragms between the blades, andthere is a corresponding excess of pressure on one side of them, each must be steam tight in the housing as well as strong main steam valve and mounted on the same rod. The pilotvalve and the chamber of the plunger are connected by twosmall pipes, and the various operations are produced by thedischarge of water under pressure through one or the other ofthe pipes. The pressure water, or oil, in the case of the steamturbine, is furnished by a rotary pump driven from the mainshaft by worm gearing. Regulation by throttling the steam waschosen as being the simplest method for the purpose. In ad- July 2, 1904.] STREET RAIL
