Asteroid impacting the Earth, artwork. The impact of a large asteroid like this is a catastrophic event that causes global devastation and mass extinction as water vapour or dust thrown into the atmosphere lowers global temperatures. Several mass extinctions in Earth's history are thought to have been caused by an asteroid impact. The most recent was the one that is thought to have caused the extinction of the dinosaurs 65 million years ago. The dinosaurs never recovered from the effects of the impact, and mammals became the dominant form of life.
