The heads are slotted and are madein sections so that for a short-cut only a small sec-tion is used, while for a longer one more sectionswould be added. The cutters, which like mouldedknives are interchangeable for different designs, aremounted on special cutter blocks which hold them atan angle so as to give a shearing cut. Shearing Cut Makes Smooth Work The cut itself is similar to that employed by thehand turner, that is, a shearing one from the highpoint down. This is obtained by the angle at whichthe knives are mounted. Suppose a bead is to be cut. Canadian Woodworker and Furniture Manufacturer 119. One man attending number of leg-forming two knives are used, one cutting from the centre orhigh point toward the right, the other one cuttingfrom the high point toward the left. In this way ev-ery cut is downward and a shearing one regardlessof the intricacy or detail of the design. It is seldomthat one knife cuts more than two members. By com-bining a number of knives to give the required con-tour, all members are cut at one time. This is howsuch high productiveness is obtained. It is usual in many shops to have a number ofextra heads which are set up for what might be term-ed stock designs—turnings which are made over andover again. When this practice is followed, the set-up consists of simply placing the necessary head sec-tions on the cutter heads, spindle and making a fewsimple adjustments. The operator soon becomes ex-pert in handling and setting up this machine so thatsetting the knives for even intricate, designs does notpresent any unusual
