Pumps being a necessary adjunct to everycondensing engine, and absorbing, as they did, a large amountof mechanical power, engineers naturally endeavored to re-duce the loss under this head to a minimum. To obtain thisresult it was necessary to consider the pump valves, whichhad so much to do with the efficiency of the pumps. To de-termine, then, what was the best style of valves for a pump,it was necessary to consider what was required of the pump, and what were the conditions under which it had to he would deal with the different kinds of pumps. Inthis paper reciprocating pumps had been classed as follows :1. Plunger pumps, such as feed pumps ; 2. Piston or double-acting pumps, such as combined steam pumps and someforms of circulating pumps ; and 3. Bucket pumps as gener-ally used for air and circulating pumps. Among other desid-erata required for pumps, the following were practically gen-. It is a single-acting engine with trunk cylinders eelat an angle of 120 with each other. The cylinders have adiameter of 2 in. with a stroke of 2 in. They are lined wilhsteel bushings, and the trunk packed with steam packing ofthe ordinary type. The valve is arranged at the end of theshaft, and admits and exhausts the steam consecutively fromthe three cylinders. This particular engine is mounted on eral for all ; they should have a good efficiency under varyingconditions of speed and work ; they should run free fromnoise and shocks, and require few repairs. Water in all caseshad been assumed as the liquid to be pumped, its viscositybeing neglected. Referring to the piston pump, a drawingof which was given with the paper, the author said that thepisto
