Image part of sequence which shows stages of White Poplar tree trunk texture as tree evolves. Young trunk here is about 5 inches in diameter. Young trees have scattered Diamond shaped pores on the bark surface. As the tree ages the 'diamonds' begin to merge and fuse together, so that in mature tree specimens White Poplar bark becomes grooved, with little sign of the original 'diamonds'.
