Two days after her confinement she had a cough, and wasfeverish. These symptoms continued until the 30th, when she hada riaror. She vomited, and felt more swollen in the neck at thegoitre. The swelling increased rapidly until the day of her admis-sion to hospital. At first view the case looked like a huge goitrewhich had been painted with tincture of iodine. The swellingextended laterally to the angles of the jaw, and backwards towardsthe spine. There was considerable dyspnoea, rapid and feeblepulse, and difficulty of swallowing. She was ordered beef-tea andwine, and large linseed poultices. April 25th.—Symptoms increased in severity; the patient waspropped up in bed; pulse 132; eyes protruding; conjunctivayellow: voice husky; pitting on pressure over the trachea. Imade an incision with a scalpel over the part, and opened thefascia to relieve tension, laving bare the rings of the trachea.
