Sarah Bernhardt (1844 - 1923), French stage actress. Photograph showing her playing tennis in 1905. In 1915 she had her leg amputated. She starred in some of the most popular French plays of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. She also played male roles, including Shakespeare's Hamlet.
