Six heavy church bells hang in the landmark bell tower of Mission San Gabriel Arcangel in Los Angeles County, California, USA. Founded in 1771, it was fourth in the chain of 21 Spanish missions established by Catholic priests of the Franciscan order between 1769 and 1833 to spread Christianity among the Indians up and down coastal California. The original bell tower was destroyed by an earthquake in 1812 and was replaced by the campanairo (bell wall) seen here with its supporting bricks, stones and mortar. The largest bell weighs 2000 pounds (907 kilograms).
