Waller was considered therival of Essex, but was, like him, removed from the army by the Self-denying Ordinance ; as a leader among the Presbyterians, he opposedthe designs of the Independents, was impeached by them and im-pi-isoned, in 1648. He was again imprisoned as a royalist after thedeath of Cromwell, but was soon released, and sat in the parlia-ment that recaUed Charles II.
