To makeit a success the dig-ging out should bethoroughly done, not only on every tree in the orchard, but also on all old relicsof peach-trees in the immediate neighborhood. A half-dozensuch old relics left untreated near by will serve thoroughlyto restock an orchard with borers every year, so that the dig-ging out method, although practised each year, will neverreduce the numbers of the borers below the danger Fig. 259.—Work of a Single Borer in a Peach-tree, natural size, w b, Burrow of borer;g-y gummy mass ; p, pupa projecting fromcocoon. 194 DESTRUCTIVE INSECTS. This is a very important factor in the success of the diggingout method. Dig out the borers in June or in June andSeptember in northern peach-growing districts. We kept out about two-thirds of the borers with tobaccostems wound around the tree just below the surface of thesoil. The old mounding method evidently has considerablevalue as a preventive, and is, perhaps, the cheapest methodyet devised. It is the most practicable method yet suggestedfor combating the insects in nurseries. Paper protectors, when carefully put on and kept intact during the dangerperiod, will prove a valuable and very cheap preventivemeasure, especially when combined with the digging outmethod. Wooden boxes or wire cages did not prevent theentrance of the borer. The favorite method of preventing the ravages of the peach-tre
