LATHAM, -- Sgt. 1st Class Brian Swanhall of the 42nd Infantry Division Band plays taps during a World War I centennial ceremony at the New York State Division of Military and Naval Affairs headquarters here on April 6. In addition to highlighting the 100th anniversary of the United States' entry into World War I, the ceremony also marked the beginning of New York State’s World War I Centennial observances and featured the World War I Doughboy Color Guard of the New York National Guard’s 42nd Infantry Division. Swanhall is from Cobleskill, New York National Guard Soldiers, some of whom had just returned from security duty on the Mexican Border, were mobilized for war on July 12th, 1917. Most of them would serve in the 27th Infantry Division — the New York Division — but some, including members of the 69th Infantry, were combined with units from across the country to create the 42nd Infantry Division, also known as the "Rainbow ; The 15th New York Infantry (Colored) would become famous as the 369th Infantry Regiment, nicknamed the “Harlem Hell Fighters.” Thousands of other New Yorkers followed, either as volunteers or conscripts for the National Army. Some 400,475 New Yorkers served in the military during World War I. They made up 10 percent of the total force, and the largest number from any state in the United States. Eighteen New Yorkers would receive the Medal of Honor for actions in the war, including eight members of the New York National Guard, and 6,621 New Yorkers gave their lives.
