Heart implant surgery (image 4 of 12). Surgeon's gloved hands placing a Novacor artificial heart (white) into the abdomen during an implant operation. The Novacor implant, which will be connected by an artificial blood vessel to the heart's left ventricle, takes over its function of pumping blood to the body through the body's main artery, the aorta. The implant is linked to an external battery by the cable seen poking through the skin at upper right. Artificial hearts are temporary measures used in cases of severe heart disease which keep patients alive until a heart donor can be found. This sequence of artificial heart implantation runs from image M561/033-044.
