Thundering Thiess The position of yellleader is filled eachyear by popular voteand is and should beconsidered a highhonor. The qualifica-tions of a good yellleader are so numerousthat it would requiretoo much space toenumerate them, butan evening spent withJ. C. ThunderingThiess will convinceanyone that whateverthey are they are allembodied in our deepvoiced leader. A goodyell leader is more im-portant than any oneman on a team, for inthese days of strenu-osity college studentsare expected to give afirst-class exhibition of rooting. Not only is rooting apleasant feature of intercollegiate contests but it is also anexpression of loyalty which thundering from the throat9. of a thousand strong voiced men, puts ginger and life intothe tired athletes on the field. His powerful voice, quick wit and general popularitymade Thiess the best yell leader Purdue has had for manya year. His work won commendation and praise whereverPurdue rooters have held sway and the people of Indianap-olis, Chicago and other cities remember Thiess as well, ifnot better than the athletes he supported. Under his direc-tion the rooting, for the past year, has been spirited andsnappy, never before have Freshmen been so thoroughlydrilled in the rudiments of yelling, never before have Sopho-mores and upperclassmen responded better and more will-ingly to the call of a leader. Thiess introduced the now popular Sky Rocket andthe rolling Purdue Chant, and many spicy apparadies onrival yells and songs. His spirit was infused into therooters at all times and he could get a yell from any kind ofa crowd and often managed to get the bull-dog yell fromsome K-9s. He is a jolly goo
