Contemporary World War One illustration of a British officer kicking a football towards German trenches as he leads an attack. Entitled “Gallant Officer scores a Goal on the Field of War”, it appeared in The War Illustrated periodical in October 1915 and supposedly depicted a real incident. The publication claimed it demonstrated the “proverbial sporting spirit” of the British and said the officer had chalked the names of his platoon on the ball. He was said to have shouted “Follow Up, Lads!” as he kicked the ball forward but was then cut down by enemy fire just seconds later. Artist unknown.
