There is acertain affinity between the two subjects,but the second is by far the more important and themore complex. Few institutions in Europe can boast a higher antiquitythan the University of Oxford ; few have a wider the political, religious, and social changes of mediaevaland modern times, it has enjoyed a continuous existence ofmore than six centuries, retaining a great part of itsoriginal organisation, and many of its ancient character-istics. It has given to the country a long series of eminentstatesmen, churchmen, and scholars ; and it has receivedfrom successive kings charters investing it with peculiar andimportant privileges. Various movements affecting the nationat large have had their origin at Oxford, and the affairsof the University have at almost every stage been closelyconnected with those of the
