But, not- withstanding the emperors assent to theseenactments, the Austrian government wassoon engaged in fomenting grave difficul-ties in Hungarian affairs, and this led tothose great military preparations on thepart of Kossuth, which rapidly took theform of active and bloody war. With great vigor and spirit did thebrave Hungarians carry on the campaign,and for a time their armies were every-where successful. But afterwards, Russiacame and flung both sword and purse into. the scale, and, though the armies of thetyrants had suffered five great defeats andlost every military position they hadgained, the odds of numbers against thestruggling patriots had now become toovast to admit of successful resistance ontheir part. Buda was stormed and takenpossession of by the Hungarians in May,but immense Russian forces were in a fewweeks collected on the frontiers, and inJuly they simultaneously poured into Hun-gary from the north and east, while theCroats, under Jellachich, advanced fromthe south, and the Austrians from thewest. The struggle was soon , the Hungarian general, surren-dered with his army of forty thousand mento the Russians, only two days after thegovernorship of the country had beenresigned to liim by Kossuth.
