Pyrotherium, illustration. This extinct prehistoric mammal was an ungulate (hoofed animal). It lived from 28 to 23 million years ago, during the Oligocene. It resembled an elephant, and was about 3 metres long and metres at the shoulder. Its fossils are found in Patagonia in South America.
