The Beguiling of Merlin was painted by the Pre-Raphaelite British artist Edward Burne-Jones between 1872 and 1877. The tale is taken from Arthurian legend. It shows the seer (wizard, magician) Merlin with Nimue, the Lady of the Lake, with whom he was infatuated. Merlin is trapped and ensnared by a hawthorn bush, looking helpless as Nimue reads from a book of spells, a book of magic. Burne-Jones is said to have used his mistress, Maria Zambaco, as the model for the head of Nimue.
