Figurehead of the Caledonia of Arbroath in Morwenstow Church, Cornwall

The brig Calledonia of Arbroath was wrecked off the North Cornish coast near Morwenstow on 7th September 1842. She had been en-route from Odessa on the Black Sea to Gloucester, England when a fierce north westerly gale blew her onto the rocks. At least eight of her crew, including the Captain, Stevenson Peter, perished. Their bodies were recoved and given a Christian burial in the churchyard of Morwenstow Church. The figurehead was also recovered and erected as a marker next to the seamen's graves. After many years, and due to the passage of time having taken its toll, in 2008 the figurehead was removed, restored and erected inside the church safe from the weather.
