Steven entered the tunnel system 5 years ago after 2 felony drug possession charges. His girlfriend Kathryn joined him after a failed try at Le Cordon Bleu Culinary School. “People can tell you they live here because they lost their jobs. It’s always alcohol and drugs. Every time. Or serious mental disabilities.” Steven says. The couple eke out a living by ‘credit hustling’ - scanning for unused slot machine credits in the casinos above the tunnels. Until recently, the couple had been known in the system for their elaborate underground "apartment", complete with sitting area, bedroom, kitchen, and makeshift shower. This past month they lost everything during a rainstorm, when their tunnel filled with water within minutes and took everything they owned with it. They now sleep on a mattress made of sound insulation from a closed down nightclub. Hundreds of homeless people live off the grid in the 200 miles of flood tunnels directly beneath the glitz, glamour, and high rollers of the Las Vegas Strip casinos.
