Vintage flower illustration. Antique Botanical art by Pierre Joseph Redouté. Circa 1833. Pierre-Joseph Redouté (1759 - 1840), was a Belgian painter and botanist, known for his watercolors of roses, lilies, and other flowers, many of which were published as large color stipple engravings. He was nicknamed "Raphael of Flowers" and has been called the greatest botanical illustrator of all time. Redouté was an official court artist to Marie Antoinette and continued to paint during the French Revolution and the Reign of Terror. He survived turbulent political turmoil to gain international recognition for his accurate depictions of plants, which remain as fresh in the early 21st century as when he first painted them.
