Nasmyth was a Scottish engineer, philosopher, artist and inventor famous for his development of the steam hammer. Up until then large forging, such as ships' anchors, had to be made by the in pieces with small parts forged separately and then welded together. Nasmyth subsequently applied the principle of his steam hammer to a pile-driving machine which he invented in 1843. He was the co-founder of Nasmyth, Gaskell and Company manufacturers of machine tools. He retired at the age of 48, and moved to Penshurst. This card is from a 1929 set entitled 'Scientific Inventions and Discoveries' (35 cards in the series). The firm of R and J Hill Cigarettes was established on Shoreditch High Street, Hackney, London in the 1700s. In the twentieth century the company issued cards with their Sunripe and Spinet Oval cigarettes. The firm expanded to include H Archer and Co and issued cards, like this set, under 'The Spinet House' brand. The company no longer exists.
