After studying medicine at the Cleveland Medical College and trav-eling in Europe, he set-tled as a physician inCleveland, Ohio, in 1851,where he remained till1855. In the latter yearhe joined an expeditionfor exploring the countrybetween San Franciscoand the Columbia was also with Lieu-tenant Ives, in 1857, inthe exploration and navi-gation of the ColoradoRiver, spending nearlya year in exploring theGrand Caiion. The summer of 1859 he spent intraveling over southern Colorado, Utah, northernArizona and New Mexico, studying a large areaof country that was before unknown. In 1861Dr. Newberry became a member of the UnitedStates sanitary commission. He had charge of allthe work of this commission in the MississippiValley. After the war he was made professor ofgeology at the Columbia School of Mines, and in1869 he was
