He was fifteen years ofage when in 1850 he followed the great rush to theCalifornia gold coasts, where he was engaged as aclerk in a store for two or three years. In 1853,with a pack train he went north into the regions ofsouthern Oregon, and as a pioneer did his part ofmilitia service during the bloodthirsty Indian warswhich raged in that country during 1854-56.
