Teach First is an new scheme aimed at attracting high-calibre staff into urban classrooms. Katie Waldegrave, 23, studied History at Oxford University and is now teaching at Cranford Community College in Hounslow, West London. Graduates 'teach first' and then, if they wish, they can transfer to management careers with one of the sponsors, including British Airways, WH Smith, HSBC, McKinsey and KPMG. The theory is that they will have gained invaluable management skills, as anyone who can manage a group of lively teenagers can handle a team of adult colleagues. Instead of the usual one-year postgraduate teacher training, recruits do a six-week course, covering the basics of classroom management, lesson planning and subject studies, before being thrown in at the deep-end.
