The bed of the River Nent. Alston, Cumbria, England, United Kingdom, Europe.

The River Nent is a tributary of the River South Tyne. Downstream, the north bank of the river is very steep with trees, mainly conifers and sandstone cliffs, but the south side is gently sloping grazing land. The river has a lot of slippery green weed growing in it which is unusual for a fast flowing river. A lot of old lead mines drain into it so the water is not pure and there are hardly any fish. In flood time the banks get washed away and, when bits of rock get broken off, the water swirls the pebbles round and round till hollows are made in the hard limestone bed of the river.
