Paine, who is president of the ChampionCopper Company. J. G. TURNER, M. D. J. G. Turner, M. D., one of the most eminent and widely known physi-cians and surgeons of the Northern Peninsula of Michigan, and a mosthighly regarded citizen of Houghton, was born, reared and educated at Balti-more, Maryland. His father, who for many years has been a prominentmerchant in Baltimore, is also well known in Houghton, where he has fre-quently been a visitor. Dr. Turners medical education was secured in the city of Baltimore,and he graduated at the University of Maryland in 1878, when just past his21st birthday. After a little more than a years practice, he came West andlocated at LAnse, Baraga County, Michigan, under a government appoint-ment, and for many years was practically the only physician in that county,remaining there until 1898. In 1892, when the Indian agency was abolishedat LAnse, Dr. Turner became acting Indian agent as well as physician. In. HON. A. J. SCOTT. HOUGHTON, BARAGA AND MARQUETTE COUNTIES 61 1900 he located at Houghton, having for the two previous years lived at theArcadian mine, of which he was physician. He now has medical charge ofboth the Arcadian and Isle Royal mines, being assisted by Dr. Jackson. In 1881 Dr. Turner married a daughter of William Harris, an earlyresident of this section, and they have two daughters. The pleasant familyhome is situated in East Houghton, and the Doctor has commodious officesin the Leopold Building on Shelden street. He is a valued member of bothcounty and State medical societies, and is also a member of Houghton Lodge,A. F. & A. M., and during his residence at LAnse was a member and theexamining physician of the Knights of Pythias, the Woodmen and otherleading orders in which he took an active part.
