This image may not be used to state or imply ESA endorsement of any company or product Open Northwest Passage, Arctic Ocean. The recession of sea ice (green) due to global warming has allowed the Northwest Passage (orange) to open fully. The Northeast Passage (blue) is only partially obstructed (obstruction shown as a blue dotted line). The dark grey colour represents ice-free areas. The Northwest Passage is a sea route that connects the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans through the Canadian Arctic Archipelago whereas the Northeast Passage lies along the Siberian coast. This is a mosaic image, created from nearly 200 images acquired in early September 2007 by the Advanced Synthetic Aperture Radar (ASAR) instrument aboard ESA's Envisat satellite.
