Italy/Iran: 'Doge Marino Grimani Receiving the Persian Ambassadors'. Oil on canvas painting by Carlo Caliari (1570-1596) and Gabriele Caliari (1568-1631), c. 1595. Shāh ‘Abbās the Great (27 January 1571 - 19 January 1629) or Shāh ‘Abbās I, was Shah (king) of Iran, and generally considered the greatest ruler of the Safavid dynasty. Abbas came to the throne during a troubled time for Iran. Under his weak-willed father, the country was riven with discord between the different factions of the Qizilbash army, who killed Abbas' mother and elder brother.
