Bayeux Tapestry Museum. Model of a monk at work in a scriptorium. Bayeux, Normandy, France. The tapestry is Bayeux's major tourist attraction. It is 70 metres long and was commissioned to celebrate William the Conqueror's victory at Hastings. Odo, who was the Bishop of Bayeux, decorated Bayeux Cathedral with the tapestry after building the Cathedral. It took a team of people several years to complete the embroidery in 8 different coloured wools. The tapestry traces the Norman dispute over the English royal inheritance. The town stands on the River Aure, and the cathedral is another major focal point for tourists and locals alike. The cathedral still has its original towers and crypt. The nave's 12th century arcades are decorated with Romanesque and oriental designs. There are several frescos including one depicting Thomas a Becket's murder.
